One jelly roll, two quilts

Many 40-strip jelly rolls — especially batiks, for some reason — include 2 strips of each fabric. For this one (Paradise Petals, by Island Batiks), I set myself a challenge: make two (small) quilts from the same fabrics, but in different styles.

Here’s the result:

Bougainvillea (left) and Azalea Walk (right)

On the left is “Bougainvillea” — based on Love Links pattern from Deb Tucker’s Studio 180. (I converted the Layer Cake / FQ instructions to use 2‑1/2″ strips instead.) I also experimented with some new-to-me computerized longarm quilting techniques: ProStitcher “Mark” feature (for the straignt lines), and “inside crop” (to get the background positioned around the focal area). For any longarm quilters, the background design is Castlemain, by Keryn Emmerson.

The second quilt is “Azalea Walk” — when it came together, it seemed oddly familiar to me somehow. And then I remembered a trip to the Biltmore Estate a few years ago.

Those subliminal recollections provide some powerful inspirations!
